I watched the movie after and then decided to read it again with that different perspective and it has definitely been one of my favorite reads in the last 5 years. As he gets older, he is what the characters call grumpy and by the books, but it’s always in a way that not only beneficial for him but for everyone in his community. His introduction of such contrasting characters and the way they affect the main character become obvious once you know all the trials and tribulations the main character has been through and how they challenge Ove in a way that allow him to do what he does best, and that it is to always be honest, follow the rules, and do things in the best interest of himself and others. I try to relate to characters in a way to understand why they may do the things they do, but I was completely unable to at first with Ove, the first person narrator and focus of the book.īut Frederik Backman, the author, does an exquisite job of flashback and the resulting symbolism and character development that is now apparent after the flashbacks both help explain his behavior in earlier chapters. It ended up being the best read in the last few years for me, albeit not relating and even strongly disliking the main character in the first half of the book. Started reading a book named “A Man Called Ove” and finished it a few months ago. Y’all I don’t do this much but I had to share this amazing book. *potential small spoilers but nothing that will truly spoil any major plot point.
